Local and National Officials Praise New Kampong Thom Meetinghouse

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invited the Kampong Thom public to an open house of their newly completed meetinghouse, Saturday 13 December 2014.  It is located on Cambodia’s national highway #6 next to the provincial high school. The following day, Sunday 14 December 2014 the meetinghouse was dedicated as a place of worship. Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission President David C. Moon gave the dedicatory prayer.

The members of the Church have been meeting in a rented building they have outgrown and are happy and thankful to have this new building.  The new meetinghouse will provide plenty of room for the membership growth they are experiencing.  Many visitors attending the event expressed an interest in the teachings of the church and will soon be contacted by missionaries. Young people from the high school located near by were drawn to the church site to take advantage of the volleyball courts that are located behind the new building.

National and local government officials attended and spoke to a chapel full of members and visitors.  The event was covered by local news media and was a once in a lifetime event for the members in Kampong Thom as they greeted visitors and explained about the Church programs.

Attending visitors and members were able to receive information about how the building will be used.  Learning stations supported by Missionaries, Relief Society, Priesthood, Young Women, Young Men, Primary, and Family History were available  to provide information and materials.  Each learning station taught the importance of each function of the Church organization and how members are strengthened through gospel programs and church attendance.  The church teaches families are central to God’s plan for his children and that families are the most important thing in the lives of members of the church.  As Christians, church members are taught to serve one another serve all people regardless of their beliefs and are not members.  An excellent lunch was served to all who attended the Open House.

Sunday the large congregation attended the dedicatory service.  President Nuth Yi conducted the meeting and spoke to the congregation.  He was followed by talks from Branch members and members of the mission presidency.  David S. Moon, President of the Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission gave the dedicatory prayer.  A choir made up of branch members provided the music.

Following the dedication, a baptismal service for a new church member, Brother Duch Seyha  was held.  Elder McGavin who serving in the area baptized him -- a wonderful way to complete the dedicatory services.
